Key points
- A bracket brings together 8 players in a knockout over 3 games: quarter-finals, semi-finals, final.
- Each player can enter several brackets, but appears only once in each one.
- Random filling; entries that do not complete a bracket are drawn at random and refunded.
- A player's scores for a game count in all of their brackets, scratch or with handicap.
- Automatic calculation of the prize pot, payouts and each player's balance.
What is a bracket in bowling?
A bracket is a small knockout tournament played alongside a league or tournament, over the same games. Eight players are placed in a draw: in the first game, they face off in pairs (quarter-finals); the four winners meet in the second game (semi-finals), then the last two in the third (final). Everyone bowls their series as normal: it is the score of each game that decides the head-to-heads.
Brackets add suspense to every game, even for a player who is out of contention in the overall standings. Very widespread in the United States, they are catching on in European and African leagues.
How to use the bracket generator
- Enter the players, one per line, with the number of brackets they want and, if needed, their handicap: “Salma ; 2 ; 30”.
- Enter the entry fee per bracket, any fee kept by the organiser and the runner-up's prize. The winner's prize is calculated automatically.
- Fill the brackets. The tool makes up as many full brackets as possible and places each player at random.
- Enter the scores for the three games as you go: the brackets advance on their own.
How the brackets are filled
The number of brackets is the total number of entries divided by 8, rounded down. With 30 entries, 3 brackets are made (24 places) and 6 entries are refunded, chosen by random draw. As a player cannot face themselves, they appear only once per bracket: if they ask for more brackets than there are, their extra entries are capped and refunded.
Players are placed at random, starting with those who have entered the most brackets, to make sure they can all be placed. In each bracket, the first-round match-ups are also drawn at random.
Prize pot and payouts
The prize pot for a bracket is 8 times the entry fee, minus any fees kept. The runner-up usually gets back the equivalent of their entry (they are refunded) and the winner takes the rest.
| Entry | Fees | Pot | Winner | Runner-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 MAD | 0 | 80 MAD | 70 MAD | 10 MAD |
| 20 MAD | 0 | 160 MAD | 140 MAD | 20 MAD |
| 20 MAD | 10 MAD | 150 MAD | 130 MAD | 20 MAD |
| 50 MAD | 0 | 400 MAD | 350 MAD | 50 MAD |
The player summary shows what each person has paid in, won and their balance: handy for settling up at the end of the evening.
Ties and handicap
If a head-to-head ends in a tie, the tool flags the match: break the tie according to your rules (most often a roll-off: one delivery each, at 9 or 10 pins), then click on the winner's name. In handicap mode, each player's handicap is added to their score for each game before the comparison.
Brackets are based on stakes between participants: follow the rules of the bowling centre and of your association.
Frequently asked questions
How many players do you need for a bowling bracket?
A bracket has 8 places. You need at least 8 different players, since a player can only appear once in any given bracket.
What happens to entries that do not fill a bracket?
If the total number of entries is not a multiple of 8, the extra entries are drawn at random and refunded. With 30 entries, 3 brackets are made and 6 entries refunded.
Which game counts for each round?
Game 1 decides the quarter-finals, game 2 the semi-finals and game 3 the final. The same score counts in all of the player's brackets.
How are the winnings from a bracket shared out?
The prize pot (8 entries minus fees) is shared between the winner and the runner-up. Most often, the runner-up gets their entry back and the winner pockets the rest.
