Why hold a birthday party at a bowling centre?
Bowling is one of the easiest birthday activities to organise, because it suits almost every age and needs no preparation. The rules take a few minutes to understand, the children all play at the same time on neighbouring lanes, and adults can join in. The activity is indoors, air-conditioned and available all year round, whether it is 40 °C in Marrakech in summer or raining in Tangier in winter.

From what age can you have a bowling birthday party?
A bowling birthday party is possible from the age of 4 or 5, as long as the centre has three pieces of equipment: bumpers that rise along the gutters so the ball cannot leave the lane, a bowling ramp on which the child places the ball before pushing it, and lightweight balls (often from 6 lb, about 2.7 kg). What does a bowling birthday package include?
For a price per child, a birthday package generally includes the game or games of bowling, shoe hire and a snack or a meal. What you get varies from centre to centre, but you will often find:
- 1 or 2 games of bowling per child, shoes included;
- a drink and a snack (or a kids' meal: pizza, burger, chips);
- a reserved area or a decorated table for the cake;
- sometimes tokens for the games arcade, invitation cards or a small gift for the birthday child;
- a minimum number of children (often 8 to 10) to qualify for the group rate.
Always ask whether you can bring your own cake, whether drinks are unlimited or not, and whether accompanying parents have to pay to get in.

To estimate the total, do this simple calculation:
- Number of children × package price (or × price per game × number of games, if the centre charges per game);
- + shoes, if they are not included;
- + cake, decorations and small gifts;
- + a 10% margin for last-minute guests and extra drinks.
Some centres charge per lane per hour rather than per game. For a group of young children who play slowly, paying per game often works out cheaper; for fast-playing teenagers, the hourly rate may be the better deal.
A typical bowling birthday party schedule (2 hours)
A bowling birthday party lasts two hours on average, which leaves time to play, eat and blow out the candles before the children get bored.
- 0:00 – welcome the guests, hand out shoes and choose balls. Allow 15 minutes: this is the longest step with young children.
- 0:15 – a quick briefing on the rules: don't cross the foul line, wait your turn, no running. Keep it short: three rules are enough.
- 0:20 – first game, about 45 minutes to 1 hour for 5 or 6 children per lane.

- Socks are compulsory: bowling shoes are worn with socks. Mention it on the invitation, or bring a pack of new socks.
- Make balanced teams by age and ability, so that every lane moves at the same pace.
- Put one adult in charge of each lane for under-8s: they help carry the ball, keep an eye on the approach area and handle the scoring screen.
