Build Balanced Bowling Teams

Paste the list of players and their averages: the tool builds evenly matched teams in seconds, showing the exact gap between the strongest and weakest team.

1 The players

· Format: Name ; Average. Without an average, the player gets the group average.

2 The teams

Key points

  • Enter one player per line with their average (“Salma ; 145”); if the average is unknown, the player is given the group average.
  • Choose the number of teams or the number of players per team.
  • Snake draft distribution, then optimisation by swaps to keep the gap to a minimum.
  • “A little randomness” option: different teams on every draw, always balanced.

How do you build balanced bowling teams?

The classic method, used everywhere from school playgrounds to leagues, is the snake draft: rank the players from strongest to weakest, then hand them out back and forth. With three teams, players 1, 2 and 3 go to teams A, B and C, players 4, 5 and 6 to C, B and A, and so on. The team that gets the best player also gets the weakest player of the next round.

The tool goes further: once the snake draft is done, it tests every possible swap of two players between teams and keeps those that reduce the gap. The result is usually within a few pins of perfect balance (averages in the example: 196, 188, 176, 171, 164, 160, 158, 149, 141, 132, 127 and 118).

Example: 12 players in 3 teams

A group of 12 players with averages ranging from 118 to 196 (combined averages totalling 1,880 pins) needs to form 3 teams of 4. Perfect balance would be 626 or 627 combined pins per team.

A single pin's difference over an evening is less than a single shot: the win will be decided on the lanes, not by the line-ups.

Number of teams or players per team?

For a league or a fixed-format tournament, enter the number of players per team (often 3, 4 or 5): the tool works out the number of teams. For a bowling night where you have a set number of lanes, enter the number of teams instead, for example one team per lane. If the number of players does not divide evenly, some teams have one extra player: in that case, tick the option that balances the team average rather than the total, so the smaller teams are not at a disadvantage. In a handicap league, also think about the team handicap.

What if you don't know the players' averages?

For a team-building event or a birthday party, most participants don't have an average. Three solutions:

  • leave the average blank: the player is given the group average (marked with an asterisk);
  • estimate skill levels: 90 for a beginner, 120 for an occasional bowler, 150 for a regular;
  • bowl a first warm-up game and use its score as the average.

The “a little randomness” option shuffles players of similar skill before the distribution: the teams change on every draw, which avoids the same old line-ups week after week, while staying balanced.

After building the teams

Once the teams are set, you can draw the lanes, create a league schedule if the teams play each other over several weeks, or play in Baker format. This is how the league nights of the ASBM (Association Sportive du Bowling Marocain, the Moroccan Bowling Sports Association) work in Rabat. Frequently asked questions

How do you make balanced teams in bowling?

Rank the players by average, from strongest to weakest, then distribute them snake-style (A, B, C then C, B, A…). To fine-tune, swap two players between teams as long as the gap keeps shrinking. This tool does it all automatically.

How many players are there per bowling team?

In leagues, teams usually have 3 to 5 players. For a casual night out, allow 4 to 6 players per lane to keep a good pace.

What if the number of players doesn't divide evenly?

Some teams will have one extra player. It is then better to compare team averages rather than totals, or to apply a blind score (often the absent player's average minus 10 pins) according to your league rules.

Is the data I enter saved?

Yes, the list of players and the latest line-up are saved only in your device's browser. Nothing is sent to our servers.
