Key points
- Each team plays every other team once per cycle (round robin), using the circle method.
- With an odd number of teams, one team has a bye each round, in turn.
- Matches rotate across the lane pairs: each team moves to a different pair from one round to the next.
- Up to 40 teams and 4 cycles (first half, second half…), with dates calculated automatically.
- View by round or by team, printing, CSV export and auto-save.
How do you create a bowling league schedule?
- List the teams, one per line, or simply enter how many there are: they will be named Team 1, Team 2…
- Choose the number of cycles. A cycle is one complete rotation in which each team plays every other team once. With two cycles, the second half swaps teams A and B.
- Enter the first lane used by the league then, if you wish, the date of the first night and the interval between two rounds (7 days for a weekly league).
The schedule appears straight away. The “By team” view gives each captain a list of their opponents, dates and lanes: handy for printing or sharing in the league's group chat.
How a round robin works
In a round robin league, each team plays every other team the same number of times. With n teams, a cycle has n − 1 rounds if n is even, and n rounds if n is odd. The total number of matches per cycle is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2.
| Teams | Rounds per cycle | Matches per cycle | Lanes per round |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 3 | 6 | 4 |
| 6 | 5 | 15 | 6 |
| 7 | 7 | 21 | 6 |
| 8 | 7 | 28 | 8 |
| 10 | 9 | 45 | 10 |
| 12 | 11 | 66 | 12 |
The generator uses the circle method, the classic algorithm for sports fixtures: one team stays fixed and the others move along one place each round. It guarantees that no match is repeated and that no team plays twice on the same night. With an odd number of teams, a dummy “bye” team is added: each team gets a bye exactly once per cycle.
Lane pair rotation
In bowling, two teams face each other on a pair of lanes and switch lanes every frame. So that nobody spends the whole season on the same pair, with its oil conditions and its quirks, the schedule rotates the matches: from one round to the next, the matches move along by one pair. In a league of 8 teams on 8 lanes, each team thus plays on all four pairs over the course of the season.
Tips for running a league
- Book the lanes for the whole season with the bowling centre: the schedule shows exactly how many lanes you need each night.
- Allow one or two reserve dates (public holidays, Ramadan, centre closures): simply shift the start date or the interval.
- Set the points system and the handicap before the first round, in written rules that everyone knows.
- To balance the teams at the start, use the team builder tool based on the players' averages.
Frequently asked questions
How many rounds do you need for an 8-team league?
One round robin cycle has 7 rounds for 8 teams (n − 1). With return matches, you need 14. Each night uses 4 pairs, i.e. 8 lanes.
What happens with an odd number of teams?
One team has a bye each round, in turn: each team gets a bye once per cycle. A cycle then has as many rounds as there are teams.
What is a round robin in bowling?
It is a format in which each team (or each player) plays all the others. It is used in leagues over a season, and in tournaments for the group stage or for match play finals.
Can I export the schedule to Excel?
Yes, the CSV button downloads a file that can be opened in Excel, LibreOffice or Google Sheets, with the round, the date, the lanes and the two teams for each match.
